Great Introduction to Chess January 6, 2009 This is the perfect inroduction to chess. My 5 year old son loves playing with me. Even though the cards dictate which type of piece to move, it's still up to the player to decide which specific piece to move and where, allowing new players to learn stategy.
Okay chess game for learning, but better sets are available January 6, 2009 We bought this chess set to teach our 2 daughters how to play. We were not disappointed, but the girls quickly graduated to the point where they did not want to play with the cards, but couldn't remember exactly how each piece should move on the board, so it still required a lot of personal coaching.
The quality of the game is not as good as I hoped. The playing board, especially, is not very sturdy (it comes folded in fourths). The pieces are a little on the small side.
After purchasing this set, a friend showed us her beginner set, and I would highly recommend it (although I don't know what brand it was). The board and pieces were sturdier, and on the side of each piece it was marked how the piece could move on the board. If you're thinking about purchasing a beginner set for your child, your money is better spent on a higher quality product than this one. Look for a set where the board is one piece and the pieces are clearly marked with how the pieces move on the board.
Good Place to Start with Chess January 6, 2009 This was a great way for Mom to learn chess. My 9 yr old daughter had played a little chess before, so she felt ready to play "regular" chess quickly. I on the other hand am still enjoying playing with the cards. My 11 yr old never played chess and she caught on quickly and is also enjoying playing "regular" chess now. Playing either way is entertaining for both of them. My 6 yr old is ready to give it a shot too! I would definitely recommend this as a great place to start yourself and kids with chess.
No stress chess January 6, 2009 This was a fun way for my 10 year old son and I to learn to play chess.
We're gettin it! December 28, 2008 When my husband expressed interest in learning how to play chess and asked if I would want to learn, I decided to find something that would help us learn together. Different friends have talked about books but this game is perfect. The 2 sided game board provides the opportunity to learn and then flip over for the 'real thing'. The cards help you learn the moves for each piece clearly and simply. The game has 3 levels of learning play and then allows you to play a standard chess game. We're on level 2 right now and we're really enjoying learning the moves and strategy in an easy, fun, and hands on way. I can't imagine using a book, this makes the learning fun! I would highly recommend it for young and old who finally want to learn this classic game.
