About the game: The first thing to do is select a recipe. With 245+ to choose from, Personal Trainer: Cooking makes it easy to find what you're looking for by helping you browse by country, ingredients, difficulty, cooking time, cooking technique or even calorie count. Once you've found something that looks tasty, take a look at the ingredients. Out of butter or need to buy some cumin? Just tap them with the stylus to automatically add the ingredients to your Shopping List. Making several dishes tonight? Just keep tapping ingredients - your Shopping List keeps it all in one place for you. Now that you've got your ingredients, it's time to start cooking. The DS Chef is there with you, talking you through every step along the way. Don't know how to fillet a trout? Watch the demonstration video when you get to that step. Didn't quite catch the last step? Just say "Repeat," and the Chef will explain it again. You can pause the recipe at any time to consult the Cooking A-Z guide, and prompts will appear within recipes for specific terms you might need more information about. Becoming a Better Cook: When you finish each recipe, you put a stamp on the in-game calendar, marking what you've made and when you made it. Later, you can search by whether or not you've made a dish before, allowing you to perfect your technique on a particular recipe, or keep expanding your culinary horizons. With an extensive in-game reference of cooking terms, pictures and demonstration videos, you can tailor your cooking experience to your level of skill, then watch that skill grow as you keep cooking. Special Input Options: The game can be controlled entirely with the stylus, for maximum accessibility. When your hands are full, covered in cookie batter or otherwise unavailable, all of the in-recipe commands can be given by speaking to the DS microphone. The keyword search function uses handwriting recognition, so you can simply write out that you're looking for a "sweet" something. Finally, that same handwriting recognition is used to make notes on recipes. If you want to remember to reduce the salt, or simply that this recipe was especially tasty, the software takes the same role as the handwritten note in a cookbook.

Not a game but its still pretty cool January 8, 2009 We got this for the DS and played around with it a bit but have yet actually used it to cook. It looks very simple I like that it can keep a grocery list for the meals you want to cook. For the price we got it I think it was a very good deal.
Personal Trainer: Cooking January 8, 2009 I'm not Betty Crocker by any means, cooking isn't easy for me but I get by. I find this software, which is really more like a talking cookbook, pretty easy to use. The recipes are a nice array of international food, so you get to try out new stuff. Features I like are you can select foods you don't eat, but the device will still give you those recipe options (with a symbol saying if a recipe contains 'banned' ingredients). I like this because some recipes can be adapted, so it's nice to still have them as options.
The little videos and instructions that give more details on steps is handy. I've been using the voice command, which is touchy. Banging pots and pans, conversations and other noises will be registered and it'll think you'll want to go to the next step, last step, etc., or say it doesn't understand. I found it wasn't too hard to use the stylus instead.
I suggest you look over the steps first to see the order they are in, as the timing of the different steps is not efficient. I was preparing a recipe the other day that instructed boiling the potatoes way too late and prep time would have taken forever if I'd waited for the prompt. So I got the potatoes started before I did step 1 (cutting the onions).
This is a fun cookbook, but can use some improvements.
Chef tutorial via DS January 6, 2009 Personal Trainer: Cooking This is not only cute, but foolproof. Can turn anyone into a chef even if they are all thumbs. This little cartoon icon talks to you allowing you to ask for repeated instructions/explanations. This can be used almost daily in the kitchen. It has instructional videos as well as stored shopping checklists. The foreign recipes compare to that of 3 generations ago in my family.
Personal Trainer Cooking January 6, 2009 My daughter (17) loves this. She has only made one dish but it was excellent and she had so much fun making. It is a great tool for anyone wishing to experiment and learn in the kitchen.
Not very useful January 6, 2009 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this when it was for sale on the site for $5. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it as I have not yet used it to cook with. It is not very practical in this format. I'm used to pulling up a recipe out of a book, my notebook of favorites, a website, or my file I keep in Microsoft OneNote. I don't think of using my Nintendo when I'm planning what to make for dinner. This program is more of a novelty than something useful.
