Okay, you "can" play Mario Cart without the wheel, but it's not as much fun. The wheel just makes the experience, so I'm suggesting that if you are going to buy an extra wheel for your game, buy one for everyone in the family! We didn't do that and now are having to go back and rectify that situation. The reason is that Mario Cart is so much fun that everyone in the family wants to play. And nobody wants to sit out.
So bite the bullet. Shop around for sales or buy them now, but don't wait for Family Night.

Great wheel December 27, 2008
My son uses this wheel for Monster Truck World Circuit and Cars Maternational and he loves it. Great value for $9.99. Far superior to the wheel that came with the Monster Truck game - it left a sticky residue on the Wii mote.
 Not needed December 22, 2008
The Mario Kart wheel is not needed. We bought four wheels because we LOVED the old version of Mario Kart. It's a family favorite. None of us use them. It's easier to just drive with the Wii remote or even easier to use the old Game Cube controllers.

This is one of those things that can cross a generation gap and appeal to all ages. I definitely like it for me and my family to enjoy.
